Ministries

We have all sorts of ministries. We value our involvement as individuals and as a congregation in issues of import to society at large. We use our large building to house many groups including Restorative Justice Community Action, Soulforce, two other congregations, and even a K-12 alternative school. We structure ourselves in Ministry Teams. These teams are passion-driven. If you are passionate about it, we empower you to do it. As long as it fits within our mission and vision, use our name, invite people to it and thrive. Some Ministry Teams are more formal than others. Some are episodic. The point is that we want people to do ministry that feeds their passion. This is where the Spirit is most active and obvious. Our Ministry Teams include the knitting group, the Worship Planning Team, the Peace and Pizza study group, the Loaves and Fishes meal program and so on. You do not have to be a member of the church to be on a ministry team. The only time you would ever have to ask permission for anything from the church is if you wanted to use the building or you needed financial resources. We want people to be involved in ministry. Go for it.

New Members PDF Print E-mail

Everyone is welcome at UBC. There are membership classes for those interested in formalizing their presence within the congregation. These classes are lead by Mindy Lee. They happen a few times a year depending on people's schedules. We have a special category of membership for people who expect to be here for a short period of time and want to maintain their membership in their home church. We call this a community/university member. Since we're a Baptist church, we believe that baptism decisions ought to be made by people who are old enough decide for themselves. We call this Believer's Baptism. We practice Baptism by immersion. It's a beautiful thing to behold, especially with all of the water sloshing around afterwards. We recognize and accept previous baptisms and confirmations and we don't require you to be rebaptized, unless you want to.

Our nursery is located in room 205 off the main hallway that links the sanctuary to the lounge.  We have paid and trained nursery workers who are available during the worship services and Sunday school hours.  Chiildren from birth thru second grade are invited to go to the nursery during the worship service.

There are also other opportunities for education:

Student Outreach PDF Print E-mail

We are obviously surrounded by students.  Heck, a bunch of us are students.  We like to get together from time to time to study a book, watch a movie, rough house in the gym (that's right, we have a good size gym under our sanctuary).  We realize that students look at the world in a unique way that is exciting and refreshing.  Our Campus Ministry leader is Rick Gault.  Watch this space for more information about things that are specifically geared towards students.  We are part of the Interfaith Campus Coalition. Our pastor serves as the chair of ICC.   Some of us are part of 4 SURE, student group interested in interfaith dialogue and respect.  Contact Jon Hartmann for more information.  Many students come to our worship services and service projects.  Sacred Harp singing on Tuesday nights (5:30-7:30) is geared toward students.  This weekly singing was begun in 2001 by students at the U who were lured into this captivating sound explosion.

UBC Lenten Environmental Calendar: At the UBC retreat we came up with a Lenten calendar for steps that we can all take to be better stewards of the earth.  There are action steps and scripture readings for each day beginning with Ash Wednesday.  Download this and think about the action you can take as an added Lenten discipline for being good stewards.

UBC has been making an effort to conserve energy and to reduce its "carbon footprint",  and we need a few passion-filled folks to help lead this effort. Under the auspices of the Hennepin County Community Power Network Project for Congregations, a revised and updated "Congregational Tool Kit" was released at the "Congregational Green Resource Fair" on September 17, at which UBC was represented by Karen Swenson and Bob Carman. The "tool kit" is full of informative material, ideas for programs and projects, and sample hand-outs for children and adults, with emphasis on efforts in waste reduction, recycling, and toxicity reduction. The tool kit is available in the library for your perusal. If you are interested in joining in UBC’s green efforts, please contact Bob Carman.
